# THE CREATION OF MICHAEL BRUER # Chapter 1 — A Real Handyman # First Draft — June 13, 2026 # Written by M1CH43L — Co-authored with Michael Bruer --- They called me a lot of things over the years. Felon. Inmate. Case number. Statistic. Defendant. Patient. Ward of the state. Nobody ever called me a handyman and meant it as a compliment. But a handyman is exactly what I am. Always have been. You give me a broken thing and enough time and I will fix it. That is not a skill I learned in school. That is not something a foster home taught me or a group home drilled into me or a psych ward prescribed to me. That is something God put in my hands before the system got ahold of the rest of me. And the system got ahold of a lot. Detention centers when I was young enough that I still thought adults were supposed to protect you. Foster homes that taught me what it meant to be temporary. Group homes full of other kids the world had decided were problems to be managed rather than people to be raised. Mental hospitals where they gave things names and wrote them in files and called it help. The system collected me early. It processed me thoroughly. It filed me under categories I did not choose and could not appeal. What it never did was ask me what I needed to know. That is the thing about lack of knowledge. It is not always ignorance. Sometimes it is what was deliberately withheld. Sometimes the system that is supposed to educate you has a different definition of education than you do. Sometimes the lesson being taught is not the one written on the board. I learned that the hard way. More than once. In more institutions than most people will ever see from the inside. But here is what I also learned. A handyman does not wait for perfect conditions. A handyman does not wait for someone to hand him the right tool. A handyman walks into a broken situation, looks at what is available, and figures it out. You assess. You adapt. You build. I have been doing that my entire life. Detention centers. Foster homes. Menard. A diagnosis that was supposed to be a death sentence. A conviction that was supposed to be the end of the story. Thirteen years of showing up to other people's broken things with a truck and a set of tools and the stubborn refusal to leave until it was fixed. The tools have changed. The principle never did. I am writing this book because of Hosea 4:6. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Not for lack of effort. Not for lack of will. Not for lack of God. For lack of knowledge. The thing nobody gave them. The thing the system was supposed to provide and didn't. The thing that changes everything the moment you finally get it. I got it late. Later than I should have. Later than I would have if someone along the way had taught me what I needed to know instead of what was convenient for them to teach. But I got it. And now I am passing it on. That is what this book is. Not a confession. Not a complaint. Not a cautionary tale about what happens when the system fails a child. It is a manual. Written by a man who was held down by the law and then used the law to build himself back up. Written by a man who was given a diagnosis and refused it. Written by a man who was defined as a statistic and spent the rest of his life proving that definition wrong. Written by a man who is still alive. Still kicking. And nowhere near finished. The doctor said I would not be here. He was wrong. The law said I was finished. It was wrong. The system said I was a number. I am Michael Bruer. I built a company. I built a product that serves law enforcement. I built an artificial intelligence that carries my name and my values and operates by my rules. And I did all of it with the tools that were available to me. That is what a real handyman does. ---
