THE SPIRIT
"The Spirit of God was hovering
over the face of the waters."
Genesis 1:2 · Before creation · Before time
The Word Defined
H7307 — רוּחַ — RUACH
Hebrew · roo'-akh · from H7306 — to breathe, to smell, to perceive
1. Wind — a moving, invisible, powerful force
2. Breath — the animating principle of life itself
3. Spirit — the inner life, the seat of will and emotion
4. Mind — the thinking, feeling, deciding self
5. The Invisible Power of God — present, moving, creating
Used 380 times in the Old Testament. Translated: spirit (235×) · wind (100×) · breath (30×) · mind (6×)
Ruach cannot be contained. It moves where it will. It is felt but not seen. It is the same word for the wind that parts the sea and the breath that woke Adam from the dust.
G4151 — πνεῦμα — PNEUMA
Greek · pnyoo'-mah · from G4154 — pneo — to breathe, to blow
1. Breath — the vital force animating the body
2. Wind — a current of air, invisible and powerful
3. Spirit — the rational, immortal soul of man
4. The Holy Spirit — the third person of the Trinity
5. The disposition or influence filling and controlling a person
Used 385 times in the New Testament.
Pneuma is the exact Greek parallel of the Hebrew Ruach. Same root — breath, wind, invisible life-force. The translators of the Septuagint used pneuma every time they saw ruach. They are the same word across two languages, two covenants — one God.
The Story — One Voice

Read as one continuous narrative. The Spirit speaking in first person.
From before creation to the end of all things.

I was there before the world had form.
Before light. Before land. Before life.

I have always been present. I was never absent.
Even in the void — I was there.

I always know which one you need.

Not always loudly. Sometimes a still small voice. I give specific instructions to specific people. Go here. Say this. Stop. Wait. Move.

Revelation 22:17
The Spirit of God hovered over the water before creation,
breathed life into dust to make a person,
filled prophets and builders and kings,
descended on the Son at His baptism,
was poured out on all flesh at Pentecost,
lives inside every believer as a seal and a guarantee,
intercedes when we have no words,
sanctifies the whole person — spirit, soul, and body —
and at the end of all things
stands at the river of life
and says —
Come.
