Never remove a wall without knowing if it's load-bearing first. The test is not just whether the joists run parallel or perpendicular — it requires tracing the load path from roof to foundation.
IRC requires a minimum 3-ply 2x10 or LVL header for a 6-foot opening in a load-bearing wall in a 2-story home. Undersized headers cause doors to stick and floors above to sag.
Pressure-treated lumber is required anywhere wood contacts concrete or masonry — sill plates, bottom plates in garages, and any wood in contact with ground.
When sistering joists, nail pattern matters. 10d nails, staggered top and bottom, every 12 inches. Don't just nail the ends.
